Round River Farm
Bachelor Valley - Lake County
Located in Bachelor Valley in upper Lake County, this vineyard consists of Roussanne, Sauvignon Blanc and Walnuts planted in the early twentieth century. The 4.5 acres of Roussanne, from which we are purchasing, was originally planted as Viognier, but after one season, it was apparent that it was not viognier. This fact was later confirmed by UC Davis. Luckily for us, the owners did not replant the vineyard and kept the Roussanne.
The vineyard is owned by a husband and wife team who are both UC Davis graduates and work in the wine industry, one as a soil scientist and the other as the viticulturist for the famed Beckstoffer Vineyards. The vineyard is planted 3.5' x 12' with alternating bi-lateral shoots and open canopy trellis, totaling 1036 vines per acre. This unique and expensive configuration allows maximum control of the canopy for maximum ripeness while controlling potential sunburn from the hot mid-day sun. Fruit from the Round River Ranch vineyard is shared with other prominent wineries including Roshambo Winery and Garretson Wines.
