2009 Las Madres Syrah
Los Carneros - Sonoma County
In 2009, the Hulda Block (Clone 300) which sits lower on the hill was hit heavily be frost in the spring. Thus, we had about twice as much syrah from the Ester Block (Clone 174) which as the Hermitage clone, so the wine exhibits much more dark berry fruit with earthy, meaty, tabacco, cigar box notes reminiscent of the Hermitage region. The wine still contain the classic black olive notes in the nose that Las Madres vineyard is so known for, but is dominated by dark, black cherry and cassis fruit on the palate with a hint of black pepper spice on the finish. Our 2009 Las Madres Syrah wine is a bigger, more aggessive wine than in the past and should be a favorite for those who enjoy classic, big Hermitage-style syrah.

Accolades & Awards
More meaty and smoky, yet with the same transparency and suppleness, the 2009 Vie Winery Syrah Las Madres Vineyard is an outstanding Syrah (co-fermented with 3% Viognier and 15% whole cluster) that carries sweet black and red berry fruit, pepper, wood smoke, wild herbs, and hints of bacon-like aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, pure, and supple, with moderate concentration, knockout texture, and a clean finish, this beauty is superb now with a decant, and will continue to impress for 7-8 years.

Dark ruby charcoal color. Brooding aromas of berry vinaigrette, vanilla, peppers and olives and dried apricot and honey with a supple, fruity-yet-dry medium-to-full body and a tangy, concentrated finish with fine tannins. A delicious, flavor-packed syrah that will be great with ratatouille and veal chops.

Inky in the glass. Blackberry, blueberry and floral aromas with herbs and some gamey notes. Lovely herbal quality adds to the black cherry and coffee flavors. Lush fruit in the mouth with oak showing mid-palate. Zesty orange peel and black pepper on the finish.

Aromas of blackberries, blueberries, and black cherries are accented by notes of spice and olive on the nose. The palate delivers flavors of blackberry and blueberry along with highlights of pepper, earth, and all-spice. A rich, bold Syrah, with balanced tannins, it's an excellent varietal made from an under-appreciated grape variety.
